Saluting Celeb Survivors

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and DC on Heels salutes all survivors, including some remarkably strong women who have publicly gone through the struggle and managed to come out on top:

The Virginia Tech alum, NBC Today show host and author of the new book, 'How I Survived War Zones' talks candidly in her memoir about going through a nasty divorce and breast cancer, while also continuing to work and travel as an NBC correspondent. We salute you Hoda!

The singer-songwriter skyrocketed to fame after belting out the lyrics, "All I wanna do I have some fun" in 1996. But 10 years later the fun-loving ballads stopped when, in 2006, her life and career were threatened with a breast cancer diagnosis.

Today, Crow is cancer free and credits a diet rich in omega 3s and daily exercise for her sustained health, according to an interview with Health magazine. She is also now an adopted mom of two boys and not just surviving, but thriving in this new stage of her life.

The actress, best known for her role as Kelly Bundy on Married... with Children, has enjoyed an illustrious career on Broadway, TV and in film after the show ended. But all of that success came to a screeching halt went Applegate underwent a double mastecomy in 2008 after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She continued to work on her ABC show Samantha Who? until it was cancelled a year later.

Today, Applegate is 100% cancer free and moving on with life. She has found a new love and is pregnant with her first child. Talk about a fairy tale ending.

The Emmy-winning journalist, who interviewed Christina Applegate about her triumphant battle with breast cancer, is also a survivor herself.

Bold and brave, Roberts decided not to hide her illness on air. She continued to anchor the news after undergoing chemotherapy and losing most of her hair. This came after a tearful announcement on Good Morning America in 2007 that she had been diagnosed with the disease.

All of these women give new meaning to the phrase, "Fight like a girl." I think now it means, no matter what adversity you have going on life, you just keep your high heels on and keep moving forward.
